I Didn’t Know My Garmin Could Do That – Pt. 2

garmincardIf you have a Garmin running watch you already know how handy they are for tracking your activity, steps, workouts, runs, but did you know all the other awesome things that most (though not all) Garmin watches can do? From receiving notifications from your smartphone to setting up those crazy workouts, your Garmin can do that and so much more!

In part 2 of my I Didn’t Know my Garmin Could Do That series I’ll be showing you another of the functions that comes with your watch like setting pace, cadence, and other handy alerts on your watch!  All of these things can make tracking your workouts and meeting your specific goals much easier and more effective!  There will be one more post next week featuring some of the most popular downloadable apps and different watch faces you can get on the Garmin Connect IQ Store so be sure to check it out!

If you’re a part of a training group, or are following a training plan, you will often have weekly workouts that focus on meeting specific effort or intensity goals that can be difficult to track.  Fortunately, Garmin has some built in features that make measuring and tracking some of these metrics much easier with the “alerts” settings.

There are lots of different alerts that you can set up on your watch – from pace alerts, heart rate effort zones, distances, etc.  You can even set custom alerts to remind you to eat, drink water, turn around, or go home which can come in really handy if you’re training for a longer distance or Ultra and really zone out of a long run!  This particular setting can only be set up directly on the watch I’ve included the written out instructions as well as a short video tutorial of how to set up these alerts on your watch!

  1. Press on the ACTIVITY/RUNbutton, then DOWN to access the menu.
  2. Choose the ACTIVITY SETTINGSmenu and select.
  3. Then press the down arrow once to ALERTSand select.
  4. You will then be taken to the ADD NEW alert screen, select.
  5. This menu is where you will choose your type of alert; for our example I will be setting a PACE alert but there are several options depending on which watch you have.
  6. Once your alert type has been confirmed you will see an option for FAST ALERT to be turned on or off. This is your max pace for this alert so you if you are going faster than your desired pace your watch will buzz or beep (or both.)  So go ahead and select ON.
  7. Now you will be asked to set your FAST ALERT pace – for this example I set my fast pace to 10:15 minute miles, press the activity button to confirm.
  8. Next you will see the option to turn on or off your SLOW ALERT – this alert will tell you when you have slowed down too much. Again, go ahead and select ON.
  9. Just like before you will be asked to set your SLOW ALERT pace – for this example I set my slowest pace to 10:45 minute miles, press the activity button to confirm.
  10. Once you have confirmed the SLOW ALERT pace your watch will be good to go! Once you have an alert set up it will remain on for all or your workouts until you either turn the alert off or remove it.

I know that these alerts can be set up in some form on all of the Forerunner watches, and the more advanced watches like the Fenix series;  for the Vivo series it depends on which watch you have,  you can definitely set up custom/specific alerts on the VivoSmart and VivoSmart HR.

Setting specific alert parameters can be really useful as you work to reach your specific training goals! I hope this makes setting those alerts up a little more user friendly.
